Dogs experiencing a discharge from their ears, accompanied by a foul odor, often indicate a purulent infection. Common causative bacteria include Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Proteus. Triggers can range from overcleaning the ears to allergies, water in the ears, parasitic infections (such as ear mites), fungal otitis, ear tumors, autoimmune diseases, and endocrine disorders.

Purulent otitis can lead to a dog's ears producing a large amount of pus, along with symptoms like redness, swelling, pain, and itching. This often prompts the dog to frequently scratch at its ears or shake its head, and it may resist being touched.

Additionally, 80% of purulent otitis cases may progress to otitis media. If left untreated, this can result in hearing loss, motor coordination issues, and neurological symptoms.

How should you handle a dog with ear discharge?

This article will outline some basic steps to help you manage this situation at home effectively.

1. Cleaning the Ears

When a dog's ears are inflamed, they may continuously secrete watery or yellowgreen pus. If these inflammatory agents are not addressed promptly, they can cause ear itching and hinder the absorption of subsequent antibiotic treatments.

Cleaning Steps:

1. Gather your tools: This includes Ear Cleanse (pet ear cleaning solution) or another gentle pet ear wash, tweezers, and medical cotton balls.

2. Remove ear hair: If your dog has a lot of ear hair, use ear powder to gently remove it. If there is no ear hair, proceed directly to cleaning the ears.

3. The Actual Cleaning Process

(1) Gently shape a medical cotton ball into a ball, use tweezers to hold it, and dip it into a small amount of ear wash;

(2) Gently wipe the ear to remove any surface secretions.

Incorrect Actions:

✘ Do not use cotton swabs to clean the ears, as this can easily damage the ear canal and may push dirt deeper into the ear.

✘ Do not directly pour ear wash into the ear, as this may exacerbate inflammation. If the eardrum is damaged, it could also affect the dog's hearing.

2. Persistent Antiseptic Treatment

1. Local Medication

After cleaning, use a clean medical cotton ball to apply a small amount of Ear Drop (fluoroquinolonenitroimidazole ear drop) evenly to the ear canal and surrounding area to alleviate ear inflammation.

Fluoroquinolone and nitroimidazole are broadspectrum antibacterial ingredients that provide dual efficacy in antibacterial and antifungal treatments.

2. Oral Antibiotics

Since a dog's ear canal is shaped like an "L," with a vertical and horizontal ear canal, the above cleaning and medication may not reach the deeper parts of the ear canal. Therefore, to control inflammation in the deeper ear canal, it's necessary to administer oral antibiotics, such as Cephalexin (cefadroxil tablets), Clavamox (amoxicillinclavulanate potassium), and ampicillin.

3. Daily Care

1. Fit your dog with an Elizabethan collar to prevent it from scratching or excessively shaking its head;

2. Regularly observe your dog's ear canal for any discharge and clean it promptly to maintain cleanliness and dryness;

3. Many ear infections are related to ear mites, so it's important to regularly deworm your dog.

If there is no improvement in the dog's ear discharge after a week of home treatment, it is advisable to seek veterinary care promptly to avoid the spread of inflammation and to make treatment more challenging.
