Cat Ringworm Treatment: 5-Day Effective Relief, Persona
Hey, fellow new cat parents! Just a headsup: Wood's lamp tests for ringworm aren't always reliable. Many fungal infections don't show up with a fluorescence under the light! So, if you suspect your kitty might have ringworm, it's best to head straight to the vet for a skin scrape test!
👀 Let me share my experience:
I brought home a new kitten last November. Since our resident feline was a bit of a terror, the new arrival was a bit stressed, and their immune system took a hit, leading to ringworm symptoms.
Initially, the kitten had only a few patches of hair loss, which I thought might have been caused by the other cat. But a few days later, I noticed the kitten was constantly scratching and even rubbing against the walls. Upon closer inspection, I found a bald patch on its body.
🔍 Wood's Lamp Check:
When I noticed the symptoms, I immediately suspected ringworm and bought a Wood's lamp online as per the internet's instructions. However, there was no fluorescence when I shone it on the kitten.
Additionally, since there was no dandruff on the areas where the kitten was losing hair, I thought it wasn't ringworm. I treated it at home with iodine and erythromycin ointment for a few days.
🔄 Unexpected Turn and Ringworm Diagnosis:
Since I thought it wasn't ringworm, I didn't wear gloves while treating the kitten. One day, while bathing, I noticed a small bump on my right forearm that had broken open.
At first, I thought it was a mosquito bite, but it didn't go away after a few days. I went to the clinic, and the doctor also said it didn't look like ringworm and recommended I use Daktarin.
Several days later, the bump on my arm grew larger and started to resemble ringworm symptoms. Scared, I rushed to the hospital for a checkup and was diagnosed with a fungal infection!
🏥 Ringworm Treatment Process:
🐾 For the Cat:
1. Iodine: Trim the hair around the affected area and gently wipe with a cotton swab dipped in iodine for disinfection;
2. Topical Medication: Apply Daktarin (ketоконазол cream) after disinfection with iodine, twice a day;
3. Vitamin B: Feed one tablet of a multivitamin B complex daily to boost the cat's immunity and aid hair growth;
4. Routine: Fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar, ensure the indoor environment is dry and wellventilated, and use hypochlorous acid disinfectant for environmental cleaning once a week.
👨👩👧👦 For Humans:
● Daytime: Apply ketоконазол cream twice a day.
● Nighttime: Apply bifonazole ketoconazole cream before bed, once a day.
Remember to wear gloves when applying medication to the cat. If you have children at home, it's best to isolate the cat with ringworm to a small room until the treatment is complete.
The kitten's medication started to show effects after just five days, and my own ringworm cleared up in less than a week, flattening out significantly. However, a few days after stopping the medication, a bump appeared on my right hand again, so I had to continue the treatment for a few more days.
Experience Takeaways:
Not all fungal infections will show fluorescence under a Wood's lamp. It's best to take your cat to a vet for a skin scrape test as soon as possible. This test isn't expensive; it costs around 50 yuan (about $7). Some hospitals might charge 80 yuan, but it's worth it to avoid misdiagnosis and spending unnecessary money on medication.
