There are numerous reasons why a dog might have tears and eye boogers. If the symptoms are mild, it might be a normal occurrence or a result of external irritants, which can often be managed with regular care and some preventive medications. However, if the symptoms are severe, and they include red, swollen conjunctiva or eyelids, difficulty opening the eyes, cloudy corneas, and more, these are typically indicative of trauma, bacterial, or viral infections, and prompt medical attention is required with treatment tailored to the specific cause.

Understanding the Causes and Handling Tips for a Dog's Excessive Tears and Eye Discharge:

1. Dog Overheating

High levels of oil or salt in a dog's diet can lead to inflammation, causing internal heat, increased tears and eye boogers, bad breath, and constipation.

Handling Tips:

● Regularly clean your dog's eyes with saline solution or a petspecific eye care solution to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

● Use Shan Jing (Jinyinhua Eye Solution), which contains ingredients like honeysuckle and lutein to cool down the body, improve vision, and protect the eyes, providing relief for your dog's eye discomfort.

● Adjust your dog's diet to avoid highfat and highsalt foods, and ensure they consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, along with adequate water intake.

2. Eye Inflammation

Significant amounts of white, yellow, or greenish eye discharge, along with symptoms like difficulty opening the eyes, frequent blinking, scratching, photophobia, and red, swollen conjunctiva, usually indicate an eye infection. Immediate medical treatment is necessary.

Handling Methods:

● First, flush the eyes with sterile saline to remove分泌物 and any potential foreign bodies.

● Use Bailangming (Neomycin Sulfate Eye Drops) and apply erythromycin ointment to alleviate the eye inflammation.

● If home remedies are ineffective, seek veterinary care promptly.

3. Foreign Body Irritation

While playing, dogs can accidentally get dust, hair, grass seeds, irritant smoke, or bathwater into their eyes, leading to redness, tears, and an increase in eye boogers. These symptoms are usually temporary but can lead to secondary bacterial infections if not treated properly.

Handling Methods:

● Flush the eyes with saline to remove the foreign body. If it doesn't come out, avoid picking at it with your fingers and seek medical attention immediately.

● Apply 1 to 2 drops of antibacterial eye drops to prevent infection.

4. Nasolacrimal Duct Blockage

Nasolacrimal duct blockage is another common cause of excessive eye tearing and eye boogers in dogs. Since tears cannot flow normally into the nasal cavity, this leads to frequent tearing and severe tear stains, which can also lead to secondary bacterial infections and eye inflammation with puslike discharges.

Handling Methods:

● Try massaging the acupoints around your dog's eyes and apply heat to the nasolacrimal duct area once or twice a day to help unblock the ducts.

● Clean the eye area with saline and use a mixture of 20% saline and 80% boric acid solution to wipe away the tear stains.

● If there is no improvement over time, consult a veterinarian for lavage to clear the nasolacrimal ducts, or consider surgical options such as intubation or reconstruction.

5. Viral Infection

Dogs infected with canine distemper or canine cough (canine infectious tracheobronchitis) may also exhibit an increase in eye secretions.

Handling Methods:

● Monitor your dog's overall symptoms. If they show signs like vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, coughing, and runny nose, it could be related to a contagious disease.

● Seek veterinary treatment immediately. Canine distemper can lead to neurological symptoms in the later stages, with poor prognosis, so it's advisable to vaccinate your dog proactively to reduce the risk of infection.
