The clinical symptoms of Malassezia infection in dogs typically include moderate to severe itching, with the dog frequently scratching itself. This medication is taken once daily and continued for 23 days after the inflammation subsides, or as directed by a veterinarian.

For dogs that continue to scratch or lick the affected areas despite treatment, an Elizabethan collar is advisable to prevent further irritation.

Since external medications may not always provide adequate relief for the intense itching caused by Malassezia, oral antihistamines are recommended for itching relief, such as chlorpheniramine maleate tablets. These can influence the central nervous system to alleviate itching symptoms, with effects often seen within 15 minutes. Of course, if the dog continues to scratch or lick the affected areas, an Elizabethan collar is still necessary during treatment.
