Effective Dog Potty Training: Tips & Techniques
Training Your Dog to Use the Bathroom Properly:
1. Begin by limiting your dog's play area to control where they can urinate. Place newspapers in the designated play area, ensuring that food bowls and dog beds are placed in corners, away from the paper. If your dog urinates on the newspaper, immediately reward them with a treat and offer a verbal praise. The best time to reward is right after they finish, as it reinforces the behavior. Even after the fact, make sure to point to the newspaper to remind them of the reward, and keep the praise consistent and simple to help them remember.
2. Once your dog is accustomed to using the newspaper, gradually reduce the area covered by the paper. When changing the newspapers, make sure to leave a section with urine on it to maintain the scent cue.
3. As your dog continues to use the newspaper for排泄, you can slowly increase their play area. If they continue to use the newspaper accurately even as the space expands, be sure to reward them promptly to solidify this behavior. If they start to go in other places, it's crucial to reinforce training immediately, as this is a pivotal moment for success. When you notice your dog about to misbehave, use their familiar cue word, like "on the newspaper" or "to the bathroom," and point in the direction of the bathroom to guide them. It's best to let them walk to the bathroom themselves rather than carrying them. Puppies that have become accustomed to using the newspaper should be encouraged to carry it outside. You can place a newspaper at the spot where they urinate outdoors, or offer a permanent reward. By the time they are about four months old, they should have a regular pattern of urinating about three times a day. Keep an eye on their schedule and take them out accordingly.
