Caring for Cats in Winter: Essential Tips for Cozy Comf
1. Cat Beds and Electric Heaters
While a purchased cat bed may often serve more as a decorative item, it's still essential to have one. After all, your feline friend, the humanshaped heater, needs to venture out to earn a living every day. A fullenclosure cat bed, soft and comfortable, provides wind protection and warmth, offering your cat a sense of security. When selecting an electric heater, opt for a product from a reputable manufacturer with a quality guarantee. If the heater is adjustable, set the temperature to no higher than your cat's body temperature. It's best to place a small blanket over the electric heater and turn off the power once it's warm enough. Never leave it on overnight or unattended.
Attention: To prevent your cat from chewing through wires, always hide the cords when using electric heating products. Never overlook electrical safety!
2. Heaters
For southern cats like myself, sun heaters and electric heat mats are essential for surviving the winter. When using these products to warm your cat, always supervise them. Cats have fewer neuron receptors than humans, and their fur lacks nerve cells, so they are not as sensitive to high temperatures as we are. This can lead to cats getting too close to the heater and their fur getting burned without them realizing it. By the time you notice, they might already be烫伤.
When using heating devices for your cat, choose models with a protective guard, or add one manually to prevent the cat from getting too close. Always remember to turn off the power when you leave the room.
3. Dressing Up Your Cat
For cats with less fur, such as bald cats, wearing clothes can be a way to keep them warm. However, first ensure your cat is comfortable with the clothing. Cats are naturally freespirited and dislike being confined, so many may not adapt well to the feeling of being dressed. Forcing them to wear clothes can only make them dislike you even more.
4. Be Mindful of Temperature Changes
During the southern winter, cats should stay indoors where it's warm and secure. If you need to take your cat outside, wrap them in a small blanket and use a windproof cat carrier to minimize their time walking outside. Avoid letting your cat experience extreme temperature changes, as this can easily lead to a cold. Let your cat enjoy the sun to help with calcium absorption and disease prevention.
5. Pay Attention to Nutritional Intake
In winter, cats consume more food to maintain their body temperature. Provide your cat with highprotein, vitaminrich foods like chicken breast and fish, and consider adding more canned food to ensure a variety of nutrients. Since cats may drink less water in the cold, offer them warm water to increase their fluid intake. To stimulate their appetite and water consumption, keep their food at around 35°C, which is the temperature cats prefer. Remember not to overheat the food, as consistently eating hot food can dull their taste buds over time.
6. Pay Attention to Cleaning and Care
Even in the cold winter, don't forget to take good care of your cat. Regularly groom your cat, keeping their fur clean and untangled. The dry air can cause static electricity in their fur, so use petspecific wet wipes or a humidifier to increase indoor humidity. Lastly, remember that as the weather gets colder, stray cats seek warm places to hide. If you have a car, check under the vehicle and around the wheels before driving off to prevent accidentally harming them.
