Why Cats Drink More Water
The primary reasons for a cat drinking an excessive amount of water can be categorized into dietary and healthrelated factors. On the dietary front, cats may consume too little water in their food or too much of highsodium foods. Healthwise, conditions such as urinary tract issues, diabetes, endocrine disorders, and other diseases can also contribute to increased water intake.
1. Dietary Causes. Normally, cats do not drink a lot of water, especially when they are fed foods with high water content. If you notice a sudden increase in your cat's water consumption, it's wise to take a closer look at their health and diet. Reflect on the recent meals you've provided; if they were low in water content or high in salt, this could be the reason for the increased drinking. Rest assured, though, as cats typically recover from this issue relatively quickly.
2. Health Conditions. Certain diseases can also lead to a cat drinking more water.
Firstly, urinary tract diseases are a major concern. For instance, chronic kidney disease can manifest with symptoms like excessive drinking and urination, and the urine may have a very faint odor.
Next, consider endocrine imbalances, such as hyperadrenocorticism. The early signs of this condition include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite, weight gain, and decreased tolerance to exercise. One of the key symptoms is symmetrical hair loss, starting from the cat's prominent areas and spreading to the abdomen, groin, and other parts.
Then there's pyometra, which typically occurs during the estrus cycle. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, frequent urination, increased thirst, vomiting, and in some cases, a fever.
Lastly, diabetes is another condition to consider. The main symptoms of feline diabetes are the "four Ts" – increased thirst, increased eating, increased urination, and weight loss.
