Rabbit Habits: Hopping, Nesting, and More!
1. The Tail Twitch
When rabbits twitch their tails, it's often a playful display, akin to humans sticking out their tongues in mischief. You'll often see them bounce around, moving their tails from side to side. For instance, if their owner tries to scoop them up or they've been caught in a prank, they'll dart away, leaping and flicking their tails as if to say, "You can't catch me, hahaha!"
2. Rubbing Their Chins on Things
Rabbits have scent glands on their chins, and when they rub their chins against objects, it's usually to leave their scent behind. This is much like how dogs mark their territory by urinating. Rabbits are essentially marking their territory and items as their own, though the scent is imperceptible to humans but wellknown to them.
3. Spraying Urine
Unneutered adult male rabbits often exhibit urine spraying behavior, which is a way to establish territory and claim a mate. While some females may also spray, it's more commonly seen in males.
4. Random Defecation
While rabbits typically use a specific area for their bathroom needs, especially those that have been trained, if they start defecating in various locations, it could be a sign that they are marking their territory.
5. Pulling Out Fur
Mother rabbits often start pulling out fur a short time before giving birth, usually from their chests and sides. This is to create a cozy nest for their kits. Additionally, rabbits experiencing false pregnancy may also exhibit this behavior.
6. Digging and Burrowing
As burrowing animals, rabbits naturally prefer living in concealed holes, as these provide them with a sense of security. Female rabbits, especially before giving birth, will often seek out a hidden, safe spot to dig a nest.
7. Using Their Noses to Nudge
Rabbits use their noses to nudge people to get their attention, which can mean a variety of things. It could be to say you're in their way and they're asking you to move, or they might be greeting you, seeking food, or wanting to play. The exact message depends on the situation.
