Taurine Benefits: Essential for Feline Health & Well-be
What is Taurine?
Taurine is a sulfurcontaining amino acid that is naturally present in the human body, although it does not participate in the synthesis of other proteins within the body. It is widely distributed in the cells of animal tissues, with marine animals particularly rich in taurine. In mammals, taurine is also abundant, especially in the nervous, muscle, and glandular tissues.
What are the Benefits of Taurine for Cats?
Taurine is an essential amino acid that cats must consume daily. It offers numerous benefits, including support for their eyes, heart, brain, digestive system, and immune function, with the most notable being its positive effects on their vision.
Eyes: A deficiency in taurine can lead to dull eyes, deformation of the central retina, and a decline in vision. Prolonged lack of taurine can result in blindness.
Heart: Cats lack sufficient taurine to prevent normal cardiac muscle contraction, which is why taurine deficiency is believed to be associated with heart and liver diseases, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, ultimately leading to congestive heart failure.
Brain: Taurine plays a crucial role in maintaining brain function and development. It helps with the movement of electrolytes in and out of cells, enhances brain function, and can reduce the level of glutamate in the brain, protecting the brain. A lack of sufficient taurine during the kitten's early life can be fatal to their future growth.
Pregnancy: If a pregnant cat is deficient in taurine, the risk of miscarriage increases significantly. Moreover, the kittens born may have poor vision development and slow growth due to the mother's taurine deficiency.
Immune Function: Taurine protects the cat's digestive and liver systems, strengthens their immune response, and supports digestion. A deficiency in taurine can weaken the immune system and hinder the proper secretion of bile in the digestive system.
How is Taurine Consumed?
Taurine is widely available in many foods, such as the hearts, brains, and livers of mammals. Seafood, particularly fish and shellfish, is particularly rich in taurine. By incorporating these foods into their diet, cats can better obtain taurine. It's worth noting that the taurine content in meat products, excluding beef, is generally lower.
How Much Taurine Should a Cat Consume Daily?
Adult cats require 400mg/kg of taurine in their dry matter diet. However, the actual demand is 1000mg/kg for products labeled with 1000mg/kg and 2500mg/kg for canned foods, as determined by stable isotope research. Compared to kittens, adult cats have a lower demand for taurine, approximately half of the kitten's requirement.
