Reasons Why Cats Keep Passing Stinky Farts
Did you know? Farting is actually a perfectly normal physiological behavior for cats. After food enters their digestive system and goes through the process of digestion and absorption, a small amount of gas is often produced. This gas then travels through the intestines and is eventually released as flatulence.
However, under normal circumstances, cats typically don't fart very often, and their farts aren't usually particularly smelly. If your cat is consistently passing smelly farts, it might indicate an abnormal fermentation in the intestines, which can be caused by one of the following five reasons:
1. Eating Too Fast
Some cats scarf down their food without taking the time to chew properly. This not only causes them to swallow a lot of air but can also lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, and smelly farts.
Solutions:
Provide your cat with a slow feeder to control the eating pace.
Feed smaller, more frequent meals, splitting one meal into two.
When pouring cat food, start with 1/4 and wait for your cat to finish before adding another 1/4, repeating until the meal is complete.
2. Fever
When cats have a fever, the abnormal rise in body temperature can lead to fermentation of intestinal contents, increasing gas volume and causing your cat to keep passing smelly farts.
Solutions:
Observe your cat's mood and appetite; cats with a fever often seem listless and lose interest in eating.
Take your cat's temperature; a reading over 39.5 degrees Celsius indicates a fever.
If your cat is feverish, seek veterinary care immediately to determine the cause.
If veterinary care is not immediately available, use diluted alcohol to gently wipe your cat's paw pads to cool them down temporarily.
3. Eating Foods That Cause Gas
If your cat has recently consumed a lot of gasproducing foods like beans or sweet potatoes, or if their cat food is of poor quality, they may frequently pass smelly farts.
Solutions:
Avoid feeding your cat fermented foods.
Choose reputable brands with high meat content for their cat food.
4. Indigestion
Cats with poor digestion are more prone to frequent smelly farts. These cats may also experience soft stools, vomiting after eating, and a lack of appetite.
Solutions:
Consider giving your cat pet probiotics to regulate their gut.
Feed smaller, more frequent meals to reduce the digestive burden.
Increase your cat's daily exercise to promote intestinal motility.
5. Excessive Protein Intake
While cats are primarily meateaters, they shouldn't consume an excessive amount of protein. Too much protein can not only cause smelly farts but may also lead to pancreatitis.
Solutions:
Choose cat food with a protein content of around 3740%.
When giving your cat chicken breast or other treats, don't overfeed them.
Feeding your cat fruits and vegetables can help promote intestinal motility.
When you notice your cat frequently passing smelly farts, don't panic. Start by giving them a dose of pet probiotics to soothe their digestive system. If the problem persists, check your cat's temperature and seek veterinary care if anything seems off.
