There are numerous reasons why parrots may suffer from diarrhea, with some of the most common being that they are kept in poorly ventilated or unevenly heated and cooled environments. Additionally, feeding them overly soft, waterlogged food for extended periods or giving them spoiled or moldy food can also lead to this issue. Under certain conditions, if a parrot is poisoned or infected with bacteria, fungi, or viruses, it may experience severe diarrhea, lack of energy, and decreased appetite.

When a parrot has diarrhea, it may exhibit signs of distress, such as opening its beak when it sees people or撞击 its cage. In more severe cases, the parrot may tuck its head under its wings, close its eyes, and become disheveled with its feathers, with an abundance of feces on the tail feathers.

What should you do if your parrot has diarrhea?

If the diarrhea is caused by dietary issues, the owner can first give the parrot some garlic water to help regulate its system. It's important to feed the parrot only dry foods like millet, corn, or sorghum, and move it to a warm location. Keep the parrot in a separate cage to prevent the spread of any potential pathogens. Monitor the bird's stool for any changes, and if the symptoms persist for more than two days, consider seeking veterinary treatment.

The firstline treatment for parrot diarrhea is typically oxytetracycline or furazolidone. The dosage for oxytetracycline is 50mg to 100mg per kilogram of body weight, mixed at a concentration of 0.02% to 0.08% in the food or water, or a 0.01% concentration of furazolidone. This treatment should be administered for 3 to 5 days, and the parrot should generally recover.

In cases where the diarrhea is due to psittacosis (bird flu), it is recommended to use tetracycline, taking 2g daily for a continuous period of two weeks. It's crucial to maintain the cleanliness of the cage, regularly wash food and water bowls, and change the water daily. Psittacosis can be transmitted to humans through the respiratory system, so protective measures, such as wearing masks and gloves, should be taken when in close proximity to the parrot. If the parrot passes away, it should be buried or cremated.

Now that we've addressed the question of whether parrot diarrhea can be fatal, if you have a particularly valuable parrot and notice severe symptoms, it's advisable to take it to a veterinary clinic immediately.
