Section 1: The Origin of Kennel Cough

Kennel cough, also known as canine tracheobronchitis and bronchitis, is typically caused by bacterial or viral infections, and it can also result from a combination of both viruses and various bacteria. This condition is more commonly observed in puppies.

Section 2: Symptoms of Kennel Cough

In the early stages of the illness, a puppy's spirit and appetite may remain unaffected, but they will exhibit a short, hacking cough. As the condition progresses, the coughing becomes more severe, often characterized by spasmodic, dry hacking that mimics the symptoms of bronchitis. After the coughing, the puppy may dry heave to clear mucus from its throat. This is particularly noticeable during cooler nights when the temperature drops. If secondary bacterial infections occur, the frequency of coughing may increase, leading to inflammation in the tonsils and throat. If not addressed promptly, the puppy's body temperature may rise.

Section 3: Treating Kennel Cough in Dogs

First and foremost, ensure your dog is kept warm. Then, administer medication, which may include antiviral oral liquids, antiinflammatory and antibacterial injections, cooling and heatreducing remedies, expectorant syrup, upper respiratory steam therapy, probiotics to regulate the gut, and highprotein food to boost immunity. Dogs with more pronounced symptoms may require hospital visits for injections of monoclonal antibodies and serum, along with all the aforementioned supportive medications. The dosage of these medications should be adjusted according to your dog's weight.
