Symptoms & Treatment of Babesiosis in Dogs - Quick Guid
Primary Symptoms: Acute cases present with a significant rise in body temperature, often reaching 42 to 43 degrees Celsius, and persisting for several days without subsiding. The mucous membranes initially appear pale red, followed by cyanosis or jaundice. Respiratory and pulse rates increase, leading to difficulty in breathing. Dogs may lose their appetite, drink more water, and experience diarrhea. They may struggle to walk, eventually collapsing. Some dogs may exhibit an enlarged, palpable, and sensitive spleen. Their urine contains high levels of protein, and may intermittently show hemoglobin, bilirubin, and glucose. The blood appears bright red, while the serum is pale red or greenish red.
Effective Medications:
1. Trypan Blue (Crystal Violet) Administer 5mg per kilogram of body weight. Dissolve in 1% saline solution, heat to dissolve, filter through gauze, and sterilize before intravenous injection. Ensure the medication does not leak into the subcutaneous tissue. Prepare the solution fresh for each use, inject slowly, and stop immediately if any adverse reactions occur. Use promethazine to alleviate symptoms before resuming the injection.
2. Bemetherol (Trinitramide) Give 5.5mg per kilogram of body weight, diluted in sterile water to create a 5% solution for deep intramuscular injection. During the hyperpyretic anemia phase, administer once daily for two consecutive days. If the dog is weak due to anemia, provide cardiac support and fluid replacement before using Bemetherol. In cases of severe anemia, blood transfusion should be performed first, followed by the administration of Bemetherol.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment: Common herbs include 10g each of Coptis, Areca nut, and Magnolia bark, 5g each of Tumeric, Bitter Orange, and Tangerine peel, and 3g of Licorice root. Boil these herbs in water for a decoction, taking one dose daily for 4 to 5 days. For dogs with weakened constitutions, add 10g each of Polygonum multiflorum and Codonopsis. During the recovery phase, provide highprotein and highenergy food, enhance care, and reduce physical activity to aid in the dog's recovery.
