Signs

Dogs may exhibit signs of restlessness and nervousness, along with heavy panting and an increased respiratory rate, as well as whining. They might also walk with a stiff gait and exhibit coordination issues. Muscle tremors and seizures can also be observed.

It is crucial to note that within the first 8 to 12 hours of the onset of seizure symptoms, dogs may develop potentially fatal symptoms such as rigid muscles and collapse. This is often accompanied by a rise in body temperature, low blood sugar, dilated pupils, and a lack of response to light.

Treatment

Immediate veterinary care is essential. The vet will administer a slow intravenous injection of calcium supplements to address hypocalcemia. If the dog's temperature is elevated, physical cooling measures can be employed. It is also important to ensure the dog receives adequate calcium during its subsequent lactation period.

Prevention

1. Avoid excessive calcium supplementation during the dog's pregnancy.

2. In the dog's diet, steer clear of high phytic acid foods such as whole grains and legumes.

3. For larger puppies, additional feeding can help alleviate the mother's milk production burden.

4. Ensure the dog receives sufficient calcium during the lactation phase.
