1. White Spot Disease: One of the most common reasons for the appearance of white spots and rot on parrotfish is a condition known as white spot disease. This illness is primarily caused by an overgrowth of tiny parasites called ichthyophthirius, which thrive in cooler water temperatures, typically below 25℃. It's often a result of the fish being kept in water that is too cold.

2. Skin Molds (Water Molds): Another potential cause of white spots on parrotfish is a condition called skin molds, also known as water molds. This occurs when the fish's tank water is not changed frequently enough, leading to poor water quality and bacterial infections at the fish's wounds. It's important to note that skin molds can initially present with white spots and fluffy growths, which can be mistaken for white spot disease. Observing the fish closely is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

How to Treat White Spots and Rot on Parrotfish

In cases where white spot disease is the culprit, the first step is to immediately raise the tank temperature to 30℃. Next, replace the water in the tank and sprinkle some fishspecific salt to disinfect and treat the parrotfish. If the disease is severe, the owner should use a 3% solution of malachite green or methylene blue and isolate the affected fish to prevent the spread to others.

For skin molds, the owner should soak the affected parrotfish in a 3% saltwater solution for about 10 minutes. The fish should start to recover within a week. If the condition is severe and the fish shows little appetite, treatment with potassium permanganate or furazolidone solutions can be administered, and the affected area can be treated with potassium permanganate for disinfection. It's also essential to change the tank water every three days during treatment to maintain water quality.
