Why Can't Stone Money Turtles Be Kept with Fish?

Firstly, stone money turtles are omnivorous creatures, often favoring meats like pork, small shrimps, and insect larvae. If housed with smaller ornamental fish, the turtles may mistake them for prey, leading to frequent injuries or even consumption of the fish.

Secondly, stone money turtles are shallowwater turtles, which means they thrive in shallow areas. The typical habitat for ornamental fish requires deeper water levels. Without a suitable resting platform for the turtles to bask in the sun, they may risk drowning.

Lastly, stone money turtles produce a large amount of feces with a strong irritant, which can easily contaminate the water quality. This is detrimental to fish with delicate constitutions and high water quality requirements.

Stone money turtles can be kept with other docile turtle species, such as grass turtles and pond turtles. However, they should not be housed with aggressive species like the Brazilian turtle or alligator turtle, as the stone money turtle's gentle and shy nature makes it vulnerable to attacks or distress from more assertive companions.

How to Care for Stone Money Turtles?

1. Space: Despite their moderate size, stone money turtles are quite active and require ample living space. It's best to provide them with a larger glass tank or pond. Inside the tank, construct a slope and a sunbathing platform for them to rest and bask. Additionally, planting aquatic plants like water lilies and grasses can mimic their natural habitat, enhancing their comfort.

2. Feeding: As omnivores, stone money turtles have a diverse diet. Offer them a variety of foods such as red worms, mealworms, lean meat, earthworms, small fish, shrimps, and tadpoles. Occasionally, supplement their diet with vegetables, fruits, aquatic plants, and algae to ensure a balanced nutritional intake.

3. Environment: Stone money turtles are quite adaptable and have minimal requirements for their living environment. Maintain water temperatures between 2430°C, regularly change the water to keep it clean and clear, and avoid excessive bacterial growth to ensure the turtle's health.

When considering mixedspecies tanking with stone money turtles, be mindful that they prefer solitude. If you decide to house them with other turtles, add plenty of artificial rocks and decorations for them to hide in, providing a sense of security.
