Our Pooch Has Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis in dogs can manifest in two forms: chronic and acute. Regardless of the type, vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms that often signal the presence of this condition. Chronic gastroenteritis can persist for weeks, months, or even years, while acute gastroenteritis tends to strike suddenly, leading to a sudden loss of appetite in our furry friends. Bloody gastroenteritis is characterized by symptoms like bloody stools and vomiting, indicating a more severe issue.

Vomiting and diarrhea are the most apparent signs of gastroenteritis in dogs, with most affected pets exhibiting these symptoms. If you notice frothy, pale yellow bile in your dog's vomit, it's a sign that their stomach is emptying. Dogs may also dry heave while eating or drinking. Pets with acute gastroenteritis may have frequent, albeit small, bowel movements. Alongside these, they might suffer from dehydration, abdominal pain, fever, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, loss of appetite, and bloody stools. If you observe these symptoms, it's crucial to pay close attention to your pet's health.

In daily life, pet owners must prioritize their dog's diet for it is a cornerstone in preventing gastroenteritis. Avoid frequent changes in dog food; if a switch is necessary, gradually mix the new food with the old at a specific ratio, adjusting the proportions over time. When planning your dog's meals, focus on lowfat, easily digestible foods. Adding fibrous vegetables and fruits can also be beneficial, as they support digestive health.

Remember, a healthy diet is not just about nutrition; it's about ensuring our pets live their best lives, free from the discomforts of gastroenteritis.
