Section 1: Symptoms

1. Persistent drooling, often linked to severe oral ulcers, may lead to bleeding in extreme cases. The saliva, which typically contains bacteria, often has an unpleasant odor and can moisten the fur around the mouth, front limbs, and chest area.

2. Severe halitosis (bad breath) is a common symptom.

3. Difficulty in chewing and swallowing may occur, with occasional loud cries of pain during eating. Some cats may exhibit behaviors like shaking their heads or pawing at their mouths.

4. Many cats may experience gradual weight loss.

5. Swollen gums, a reddened oral mucosa, and ulcers on the gums, tongue surface, throat, and soft palate are typical. The ulcers are often worst on the molars and incisors, followed by the throat and soft palate. Some teeth may also show signs of ulcers.

Section 2: Causes

Oral ulcers can be attributed to a weakened immune system, which is considered one of the primary causes by veterinary researchers. However, there are likely other contributing factors.

1. Viral infections, such as feline leukemia virus, feline AIDS, feline calicivirus, and feline herpesvirus infections.

2. Chronic infections with oral bacteria and fungi.

3. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of vitamins, especially the Bcomplex, which can directly lead to certain oral diseases. Deficiencies in zinc and selenium can also play a role.

4. Certain systemic diseases may lead to oral ulcers, including kidney disease, chronic renal failure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, hyperthyroidism, and others.

5. Ingestion of foreign objects like wood shavings, fish hooks, wires, fish bones, or sewing needles can cause injury to the mouth, leading to inflammation or ulcers. Similarly, ingestion of刺激性 drugs or chemicals can also provoke oral irritation or ulcers.
