Contusions to the abdominal area are relatively common in everyday life, often resulting from accidents such as car crashes or unexpected incidents. These traumas can cause internal organs within the abdomen to be struck or collide, leading to a variety of symptoms in dogs.

Dogs may exhibit signs such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and hematochezia (blood in stool). It is crucial to closely monitor any changes in your dog's abdominal posture. Abdominal injuries can lead to damage to vital organs like the liver and spleen, potentially causing intraabdominal hemorrhaging and even shock.

Diagnosis of intraabdominal hemorrhaging is often confirmed by the withdrawal of noncoagulating blood during an abdominal tap. If your dog sustains an abdominal injury, it is imperative to seek veterinary care immediately. In cases of suspected intraabdominal hemorrhaging, surgery should be performed as soon as possible.

Treatment involves aggressive fluid resuscitation and prompt surgical intervention. It is crucial not to wait for blood pressure to stabilize before treating, as abdominal hemorrhaging poses a severe threat to a dog's life. The longer the delay, the higher the mortality rate. Before surgery, ensure the establishment of two or more intravenous lines to maintain a clear pathway. In some cases, a large vein catheter may be necessary, and all resuscitation measures should be prepared.

It's important to note that while a dog with abdominal hemorrhaging may appear relatively stable before surgery, their blood pressure can plummet dramatically once the abdomen is opened, severely affecting circulation.

During surgery for abdominal hemorrhaging, a tracheal intubation anesthesia is commonly used. To save time and costs, a dog can be administered local infiltration anesthesia for skin incision. This allows for quick identification of the bleeding internal organs, enabling immediate hemostasis. Subsequently, a thorough examination of the abdominal cavity is conducted, followed by the completion of the treatment and surgical procedure.

Injuries can also lead to damage to internal organs such as the liver and spleen, resulting in intraabdominal hemorrhaging and potentially causing shock. The direct consequence of abdominal organ injury and bleeding is a reduction in circulating blood volume, posing an immediate threat to life. Early treatment and management are, therefore, essential.
