1. Green Plants Consumption
If your furry friend has been munching on greenery, such as leaves, grass, or fruits, their stool might turn green. These plants contain green pigments that, upon digestion, can lead to green feces. Rest assured, this is usually not a cause for alarm. As long as it's not a persistent issue, there's no need to rush to the vet.
2. Overeating or Digestive Issues
Sudden overindulgence in food can also result in green stools. If your dog eats without limits, leading to indigestion, it can cause stomach upset, leading to food buildup and even bloating. These issues can lead to excessive stomach activity, causing a surge in bile production. Over time, the digestion process can oxidize bilirubin, which, when excreted, can turn the stool green.
3. Colitis
Unexplained green stools might indicate canine colitis. When the colon becomes inflamed, it can release acidic substances. If bilirubin passes through inflamed or damaged colon lining, it can interact with these acids or the oxygen in the body, leading to oxidation. This oxidation turns bilirubin into biliverdin, which can change the color of the stool to green. If this is the case, it's best to take your dog to the vet. At home, you can administer enrofloxacin tablets to help with gastrointestinal inflammation.
4. Cholecystitis
If your dog consistently has green stools, it could be a sign of gallbladder issues. The gallbladder plays a crucial role in determining stool color; normal bile is usually yellow, resulting in yellow or dark yellow stools. However, if the stool is green, it suggests that the bile is also green, not the usual secretion, which is a symptom of cholecystitis. It's advisable to take your dog to the vet for a comprehensive checkup if you suspect this condition.
