Part 1: Signs of Estrus in Rabbits

Behavioral Symptoms:

During the estrus phase, female rabbits exhibit an unusual level of excitement and restlessness, being more active than usual. They may pace back and forth in their cage, some might show a decrease in appetite. It's not uncommon for them to rest their front paws on the cage or stamp their hind legs on the ground. Due to discomfort in the vaginal area, they might urinate frequently and, under the influence of hormones, may even exhibit nestbuilding behavior.

If a male rabbit is housed in the same cage, the female will主动 approach and mount him, or even urinate on him to stimulate his desire. When the male starts chasing and mounting the female, she will adopt a posture indicating her readiness for mating.

Physiological Changes:

Primarily referring to the changes in the vulva of the female rabbit. For those with less pronounced behavioral signs, observing the vulva can help determine if she is in estrus. Initially, the vulva appears pale; during the early stages of estrus, it turns pink, but the change is subtle. By the midstages, the vulva becomes bright red with a significant amount of mucous discharge, making it moist. During this phase, the fertility rate is notably higher if breeding occurs. As estrus approaches its end, the vulva turns dark purple, and after estrus has passed, it gradually returns to its pale color.

Part 2: Estrus Cycle of Female Rabbits

The duration of each estrus cycle in female rabbits is typically around 35 days. After estrus ends, it usually takes about 815 days for the next estrus to occur. Due to variations in rabbit breeds and husbandry conditions, the estrus cycle can differ significantly among individuals.

It's important to note that rabbit ovulation occurs approximately 1012 hours after mating stimulation, similar to cats. If a female rabbit does not mate during estrus, she will not ovulate.

Part 3: Precautions During Estrus

1. The best time for breeding is during the midestrus phase when the vulva turns bright red, which can significantly increase the chances of successful conception.

2. It's not advisable to breed rabbits too young. Generally, it's recommended to wait until they reach 70% of the average adult weight for their breed before breeding.

3. During estrus, pay close attention to the cleanliness of the rabbit's cage. Regular cleaning and disinfection, along with maintaining dry and wellventilated conditions, can prevent infections such as vaginal inflammation.

Understanding the symptoms, cycle, and precautions related to rabbit estrus is crucial. If you have no intention of breeding your rabbit, consider a spay procedure. This can effectively reduce the incidence of diseases like pyometra and extend the rabbit's lifespan.
