Typically, puppies become infected with internal parasites due to the mother dog being infected during pregnancy. These parasites can be transmitted to the pups through the placenta, or the pups may ingest food or water contaminated with parasite eggs, leading to infection via the gastrointestinal tract, where they mature into adult worms within the intestines. If a dog is chronically infected with internal parasites, it may exhibit symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, weight loss, and stunted growth. In severe cases, this can lead to intestinal blockages or even neurological symptoms. As a result, pet owners should promptly select an appropriate internal deworming medication based on the dog's age and weight to administer to their furry friend.

Do Dogs Need to Fast Before Internal Deworming?

It is not necessary for dogs to fast before internal deworming, but it is advisable to wait for about 12 hours between meals. This is because after two hours of digestion, there is little food left in the dog's stomach, and it is not completely empty. Taking the deworming medication at this time can enhance its effectiveness. Additionally, to maximize the impact of the deworming medication, it may be beneficial to avoid feeding the dog for 23 hours after administering the medication.

Dosage and Timing of Deworming Medication for Dogs

It is recommended that puppies be dewormed monthly, while adult dogs should be dewormed every three months. If a dog frequently consumes raw meat, the deworming interval should be shortened. The appropriate deworming medication should be chosen based on the type of parasite, with a preference for highefficiency, lowtoxicity options.

It is best to avoid deworming during the time when the dog is scheduled for vaccinations, and there should be at least a 5day interval between deworming and vaccination. If a dog is planning to become pregnant, it is crucial to deworm the animal before conception to prevent the transmission of parasites to the puppies.

The dosage of oral deworming medication should be determined based on the dog's weight and overall health. Pet owners should strictly follow the veterinarian's instructions when administering deworming medication. An insufficient dose may not effectively eliminate the parasites, while an excessive dose could pose a risk to the dog's life.
