How can we prevent our cats from scratching the sofa and break this habit?

Regularly trimming your cat's claws is a key step.

Cats scratch to keep their claws sharp and to a manageable length, and many of their clawrelated behaviors are instinctual. By regularly trimming your cat's nails, you can satisfy their natural urge to scratch without allowing them to damage your furniture, such as the sofa, out of curiosity or mischief.

Provide alternative scratching options for your cat.

While we can't change a cat's innate desire to scratch and file down their claws, we can redirect their attention. Offering a dedicated scratching post can train your cat to use it, effectively reducing the likelihood of them damaging your sofa.

There are various scratching posts available on the market. When choosing one, opt for natural materials like rope or wood, and ensure they are securely mounted vertically. Some cats also enjoy natural grass mats designed specifically for them.

Use a water gun for educational purposes.

Cats are particularly sensitive to sudden surprises. If you catch your cat scratching the sofa, use a water gun to gently spray them. This unexpected "attack" will likely scare them away. With repeated use, your cat may develop a conditioned response: going to the sofa to scratch equals being startled by something, and they will naturally avoid the sofa as a result.

Use lemon water to deter your cat.

Cats generally dislike the smell of lemon water, orange peels, mosquito repellent, and camphor oil. Spraying a little lemon water in the area where the sofa is located can refresh the air and keep your cat away from the furniture.
