Is a Warm Cat Ear a Sign of Fever?
One of the symptoms of a cat having a fever is when their ears become warm. Just like humans, cats can easily catch a cold and develop a fever during sudden changes in weather or extreme temperature differences. If you notice your cat seems listless, with warm ears, a dry nose, and sweaty paws, it's important to act quickly. The best way to check on your cat's health in such cases is to take their temperature directly, using a professional method.
How to Accurately Measure a Cat's Temperature: Rectal Method
1. First, sanitize an alcohol thermometer and shake it down to below 35 degrees. Apply a small amount of erythromycin ointment or water to lubricate the thermometer.
2. It's easiest to have two people for this task: one to hold the cat and the other to take the temperature. Alternatively, you can measure the temperature when the cat is sleeping, or even use a towel to gently secure the cat in place.
3. Calm your cat down, gently lift their tail, and slowly insert the thermometer into their rectum, about 45 centimeters deep. After one minute, remove the thermometer and read the temperature.
In cases where the cat is uncooperative, you can also use the inner thigh or an ear thermometer. Note: A cat's skin temperature is about 0.5 degrees below the rectum, so add 0.5 degrees when taking the temperature from the inner thigh.
What to Do If Your Cat Has a Fever?
Treating Low Fever
If your cat has a lowgrade fever, you can consult a veterinarian online and take appropriate measures based on their other symptoms. If there's no improvement within 24 hours, it's advisable to take your cat to a veterinary hospital promptly.
Treating High Fever
In the case of a high fever, there should be no hesitation in taking your cat to a veterinary hospital for examination and treatment.
Cats with a fever can be a complication of various diseases, such as fractures, lymph node swelling, abscesses, wound infections, or tumors. Early treatment is best to prevent the condition from worsening!
