Newly Purchased Parakeet Scared of People: What to Do?
Part 1: How to Care for a New Parakeet?
When your new parakeet arrives home, it's essential to give it a moment of tranquility. Place the bird in a quieter, less brightly lit area, or simply cover the cage with a cage cover if the room is too bright. Ensure the environment is calm to prevent any unnecessary distress.
During the first 2 to 3 days, focus on feeding your parakeet without causing any disturbances. Allow the bird to acclimate to its new surroundings at its own pace. Once the parakeet seems more relaxed and active, gradually raise the cage cover, increasing it by a third each day, to help it adjust to the change in environment.
Typically, parakeets should be fully adjusted to their new home within a few days. To foster a bond, start handfeeding your parakeet. Place the food in your hand, gently place it inside the cage, and let the bird peck at it. This method helps the parakeet understand that you mean no harm and gradually familiarizes it with your scent and voice.
Part 2: What to Do If Your Parakeet Is Fearful of People?
If your parakeet is particularly shy around humans, it may take some time before you can interact with it directly. Here are some steps to help train your bird:
1. Sound Desensitization
Hang the bird cage in a location where it can hear human voices but not in a noisy area. This will allow the parakeet to gradually get used to the sounds of your household and become more integrated into the family environment.
2. Increase Interaction
During the first week at home, spend a few minutes each day speaking to your parakeet, allowing it to become accustomed to your voice. Before feeding, use a consistent sound, such as calling its name or whistling, to prepare it for future training sessions.
3. HandFeeding
Once your parakeet seems less anxious around you, start handfeeding as described. If your parakeet appears stressed during feeding, take a break and try again later.
4. Encourage OutofCage Interaction
After your parakeet becomes less fearful, gently encourage it to step out of the cage by using your fist with an extended index finger as a perch. Gently push the parakeet to step onto it. When allowing your parakeet to step out, ensure all doors and windows are closed, and mirrors are covered to prevent any accidents.
By addressing the issue of a newly acquired parakeet that is afraid of people, we hope to assist all pet owners. While small animals may be timid, they are also highly intelligent. With patience and consistent training, you'll achieve the bond you desire.
