Signs and Symptoms of Mycoplasma Infection
Mycoplasma is one of the infectious respiratory diseases in cats, known to cause Mycoplasma pneumonia. It can also lead to upper respiratory infections and chronic bronchitis among other conditions. This pathogen primarily spreads through respiratory droplets and can occur yearround. Symptoms are generally mild and may include irregular fevers, irritating coughs, sneezing, difficulty breathing, increased mucous or nasal discharge, and conjunctivitis. In more severe cases, it can lead to Mycoplasma conjunctivitis in cats, resulting in red and swollen conjunctivae.
Prevention and Treatment of Mycoplasma
Regularly clean the eyes and nose discharges of your cat. A simple wipe with a wet paper towel is sufficient, but for added care, gently wipe with physiological saline solution twice a day.
Disinfect the environment using petsafe disinfectants. Be mindful to avoid getting any discharges on your clothing, and isolate the affected cat from the living area as much as possible. Always wash your hands thoroughly and sanitize after handling the cat.
Consistent medication is key. Antibiotics can alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of the illness. Macrolide antibiotics, such as erythromycin and azithromycin, or fluoroquinolones, are often the firstline treatments. Tetracyclines are also effective for treating Mycoplasma pneumonia, with a typical treatment course lasting around two weeks.
