There are numerous factors that can lead to diarrhea in dogs, such as indigestion, parasites, and food poisoning. While some human gastrointestinal medications can be used for dogs, it's important to note that not all are suitable for treating canine diarrhea.

1. Gastroenteritis

When a dog develops gastroenteritis due to eating something inappropriate, it's often caused by bacterial infection. In such cases, you might consider giving your dog overthecounter human gastrointestinal medications like 39 Gaotai or Zhenglu Wan. By administering half the recommended dose, these medications can be effective in treating your dog's gastroenteritis.

However, it's crucial to identify the root cause of the gastroenteritis, whether it's due to spoiled dog food or the dog having eaten something else. Understanding the source of the problem is key to addressing it at its core. Otherwise, longterm reliance on gastrointestinal medications may only provide temporary relief.

2. Parasites

If a dog's diarrhea is caused by a parasitic infection, it often includes worm eggs or even live worms. In this situation, I would advise against using human deworming medications or gastrointestinal drugs. Since dogs have different physiological structures from humans, they are prone to different types of parasites. Human deworming medications or gastrointestinal drugs may not be effective against canine parasites. Therefore, it's best to consult a veterinarian for deworming or opt for deworming medications specifically formulated for dogs.

3. Stress Response

Dogs differ from humans in their stress responses, and factors like irregular eating habits or recent vaccinations can trigger stress. Dogs experiencing stress often suffer from diarrhea as well. Human gastrointestinal medications are not suitable in these cases. Instead, you can feed your dog probiotics like Wangyi Zhi, which help regulate the gut flora and gradually restore the dog's appetite.
