Is Neutering Really a Blessing or a Curse for Pets?

Neutering female pets can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine diseases. Typically, unneutered cats and dogs have a 23% chance of developing uterine diseases, with around 1% dying from pyometra.

Neutering male pets eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, prostatic, and perianal tumors. New research also indicates that neutered dogs tend to live about a year and a half longer than intact dogs. Therefore, neutering can prevent reproductive system diseases in pets and extend their lifespan.

Neutering can also reduce behavioral issues caused by hormonal surges, such as aggressive behavior towards estrous females during walks, marking territory with urine, and aggressive reactions to intruders, as well as the bad temper caused by excessive testosterone in male cats. These behaviors can be greatly improved through neutering.

Even the most wellbehaved pets can be difficult to control during their heat cycles, leading to them running away and getting lost. To avoid such situations, neutering is necessary. Additionally, it helps prevent the uncontrolled breeding of pets, which can lead to an excessive number of cats and dogs in society.

Dogs are completely anesthetized during the surgery, ensuring they feel no discomfort. Anesthesia can be administered via injection or inhalation, and sometimes involves the use of heart and respiratory monitors or electrocardiograms. The specific procedures depend on the pet's size, age, and the veterinarian's preference.

The incision for a male dog's surgery is typically in the scrotum, while in older dogs, it may be at the base of the penis in front of the scrotum. If one or both testicles have not descended into the scrotum, an abdominal incision may be necessary.

Female puppies will undergo surgery with an abdominal incision.

Pets may appear a bit dizzy until the anesthesia wears off. Some owners take their pets home immediately after surgery, while others may need to stay in the hospital for a day to be monitored. Most pets will wake up from the anesthesia within a few hours.

Limit your pet's activity for a few days after the surgery, and make sure to have an Elizabethan collar ready. Monitor the surgical site for swelling, redness, or loose sutures, as these symptoms could indicate an infection, and you should take your pet to the vet immediately.

Important Tips

Dear pet owners, neutered pets will eventually stop cycling, but it's not a guarantee that they will never cycle again. They will also no longer run away in search of love, and their bad tempers will improve over time.

Neutered pets may gain weight if they consume highcalorie foods, so it's essential to adjust their diet accordingly. If your pet starts to look overweight, remember to modify their food portions and frequency.
