Section 1: Rabbit Pinworm Disease

The pinworms responsible for this disease are approximately 3 to 5 mm in length, with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.2 mm. The female worms can grow up to 8 to 12 mm in length and have a very pointed tail. This condition does not require an intermediate host. Adult worms lay eggs in the rabbit's rectum, where they develop into infective larvae. These larvae are then excreted from the body. Rabbits become infected by ingesting eggs containing the infective larvae, which hatch in the stomach and then mature into adults in the cecum or colon.

Section 2: Clinical Symptoms of Rabbit Pinworm Disease

Typically, rabbits with a mild case of pinworm disease show no clinical symptoms. However, when rabbits are severely infected, larvae feed on the mucous membrane in the cecum, causing damage to the intestinal lining. This can lead to ulcers and colitis. Affected rabbits may exhibit symptoms such as decreased appetite, lack of energy, rough hair, weight loss, and diarrhea, which can be fatal in severe cases. Rabbits may also experience anal itching and pain, often tilting their heads back towards the anus in an attempt to bite it to relieve the itching. In severe infections, adult worms may be visible around the anus, and the worms can be found in the rabbit's feces.

Section 3: Prevention and Treatment Measures for Rabbit Pinworm Disease

1. Since rabbit pinworm disease does not require an intermediate host, it can be transmitted directly through the environment contaminated by the rabbit's feces. Therefore, it is crucial for owners to regularly clean and disinfect the rabbit's enclosure and equipment, and to properly compost the rabbit droppings.

2. Regularly inspect rabbits for signs of infection and promptly treat them with drugs such as levamisole hydrochloride.

3. For the treatment of rabbit pinworm disease, the following medications can be used: levamisole hydrochloride, 56 mg/kg body weight, taken orally; albendazole, 210220 mg/kg, taken orally once; and dithiophene, administered at a 2% concentration in feed.

4. New rabbits should undergo a onemonth quarantine and observation period before being introduced to the group, ensuring they are free of disease. Regular deworming is recommended, with the entire group dewormed once during spring and autumn. In cases of severe infection, deworming may be necessary every 1 to 2 months.
