Section 1: Reasons for a Rabbit Tilting Its Head

1. Bacterial Otitis Media Caused by Pasteurella Multocida

One of the hallmark symptoms of Pasteurella multocida otitis media in rabbits is infectious rhinitis. However, when the bacteria spread to the rabbit's inner ear, it can trigger otitis media. The rabbit's ears become infected by the bacteria, leading to damage to the vestibular apparatus or the accumulation of pus, which can compress the ear canal, ultimately causing the rabbit to tilt its head.

2. Middle Ear Inflammation Due to Ear Mites

Rabbits have long ears, and if their ears are not kept clean or if they live in a damp environment, they are prone to ear mite infections. This can force the rabbit to tilt its head as a result of the discomfort caused by the mites.

3. Fungal Middle Ear Inflammation

Rabbits are susceptible to fungal diseases, primarily affecting their body and limbs. However, fungi can also infect the ears, leading to secondary infections and subsequent otitis media.

4. Other Causes

A rabbit's head tilt can also be caused by a concussion, such as when the rabbit's head hits a hard object, gets infected with coccidia, or experiences enteritis.

Section 2: Treatment Methods for a Rabbit's Head Tilt

Firstly, examine the rabbit's ears for signs of inflammation, such as foreign objects, discharge, or foul odors. If you find any, it may indicate an infection with mange mites or fungi. Begin by cleaning the rabbit's ears with hydrogen peroxide. After cleaning, treat the affected rabbit with chloramphenicol eye drops for ear drops. Additionally, administer penicillin (510 mg/kg body weight) and streptomycin (20,00030,000 IU/kg body weight) intramuscularly twice a day for five consecutive days. If the rabbit does not improve after five days of treatment, the chances of recovery are slim. If the rabbit is of low value, it may be best to consider humane euthanasia.

Section 3: Prevention Methods for a Rabbit's Head Tilt

1. Regularly vaccinate all rabbits against Pasteurella multocida.

2. If you notice a rabbit shaking its head or ear flicking, promptly check for inflammation or signs of ear mites or fungal infections. If present, treat promptly to prevent the condition from worsening into a head tilt. Also, ensure proper rabbit care and management. If you're unsure about how to manage your rabbit's care, refer to the article "The Right Way to Care for Rabbits" to provide your rabbit with a comfortable living environment.

OxyPet Doctor's Tip:

It's impossible to prevent rabbit head tilt with 100% effectiveness. Regardless of the preventive measures taken, some rabbits in a largescale rabbit farm may still develop the condition. However, by taking the best possible precautions, you can significantly reduce the incidence of head tilt in rabbits. We encourage owners to be proactive in preventing this condition.
