Advanced Canine Distemper Treatment Strategies Explaine
Distemper, a highly contagious disease caused by the Distemper Virus, affects dogs of all ages, though it is particularly prevalent in puppies and dogs that are unvaccinated or have compromised immune systems.
Symptoms of Distemper:
Mild Cases: Typically present with fever, a temporary decrease in appetite, lethargy, and mild mucopurulent conjunctivitis, with no significant local symptoms.
Severe Cases: Characterized by fever, mucopurulent discharge from the eyes and nose, which may eventually become purulent. Dogs may also exhibit depression, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and a dry cough that quickly turns into a productive cough with phlegm.
Neurological Symptoms: Include seizures, increased nervousness, hyperactivity, circling, and a series of behavioral changes. Dogs may experience mild to severe paralysis of the lower or all limbs. Chronic local or generalized seizures, along with marked keratitis or conjunctivitis, may also occur.
Treatment for Distemper:
Sedation: Administer 5mg of Valium intramuscularly, followed by intravenous fluid administration 10 minutes later.
Antibiotics: 80ml of 0.9% saline mixed with 0.79g of ceftriaxone.
Supportive Fluids: 80ml of 0.9% saline mixed with 5ml of Astragalus Injection.
Antiviral Medication: 1ml of Antiviral先锋 injected subcutaneously; 7ml of CDV monoclonal antibody injected subcutaneously; and interferon at 2.5 million units injected subcutaneously.
Astragalus Injection: Known for its properties of invigorating Qi, nourishing the essence, reinforcing the body's resistance, and promoting heart and blood circulation, as well as benefiting the spleen and draining dampness. Administer one vial orally daily.
Valium Tablets: Take one tablet (2.5mg) once daily, preferably after 9 PM.
Proteinase: Take one packet (1g) twice daily.
FollowUp Treatment: Continue with Astragalus Injection and Proteinase for an additional 7 days after the initial 7day course, until the dog recovers fully.
Distemper is a severe, highly infectious disease that can cause systemic symptoms with a low cure rate and a prolonged duration. It is crucial to avoid excessive use of antibiotics and focus on antiviral therapy, symptomatic treatment, and necessary supportive care.
