Internationally, pet acupuncture holds a significant position, especially for those from the West. This mysterious Eastern medical practice is often perceived as safer than medication. I consulted several foreign veterinarians, and although they had varying opinions on acupuncture, they all agreed on one point: this art form has no side effects.

Now, the question arises: what is the purpose of pet acupuncture?

As we delve into this topic, it's essential to mention the advocates of pet acupuncture, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), a key organization in the field.

Originating in 1974, the society's logo naturally carries a unique "folk" charm. Its founder, Mark Kavanagh, is hailed as the pioneer of pet acupuncture abroad and is affectionately known as the "Acupuncture Horse."

Pet acupuncture is highly effective for a variety of functional diseases, such as:

Musculoskeletal issues, including arthritis, disc disease, and traumatic nerve damage

Respiratory system diseases, such as feline asthma

Skin diseases, like allergic dermatitis and canine sarcoma

Gastrointestinal diseases, such as diarrhea

And certain reproductive system disorders

It is thanks to the efforts of IVAS that pet acupuncture has gained recognition from the National Institutes of Health in the United States. In other words, if your veterinarian recommends acupuncture for your dog, you can rest assured and proceed without worry.

But is pet acupuncture safe?

Whether in China or abroad, only veterinarians who have completed professional acupuncture training and obtained certification can perform acupuncture. However, it's important to note that pet acupuncture is divided into two categories: one for small animals, such as cats and dogs, which is the most common; and another for large animals, such as horses, cows, and sheep.

The needles used in these two types of acupuncture differ, and the precautions to take are also different. While some veterinarians may be proficient in both, the techniques for acupuncture on large animals are different from those on small animals, and they should not be confused.

As for side effects, acupuncture does have them. The most severe case reported so far is that a dog may appear drowsy and listless within 24 hours after acupuncture. However, rest assured that this condition will resolve within 24 hours after symptoms appear.

Finally, what if I'm still worried about the needles damaging my dog?

Firstly, the needles used in acupuncture are strictly sterilized. Moreover, it's worth noting that modern acupuncture encompasses more than just needles; it also includes moxibustion, water moxibustion, electroacupuncture, and laser acupuncture, among others. These methods vary in their approach.

In essence, the principles of pet acupuncture are the same as those of human acupuncture, so you can feel completely at ease. Therefore, I won't delve into the principles of acupuncture here.
