But is pet acupuncture safe?

Whether in China or abroad, only veterinarians who have completed professional acupuncture training and obtained certification can perform acupuncture. However, it's important to note that pet acupuncture is divided into two categories: one for small animals, such as cats and dogs, which is the most common; and another for large animals, such as horses, cows, and sheep.

The needles used in these two types of acupuncture differ, and the precautions to take are also different. While some veterinarians may be proficient in both, the techniques for acupuncture on large animals are different from those on small animals, and they should not be confused.

As for side effects, acupuncture does have them. The most severe case reported so far is that a dog may appear drowsy and listless within 24 hours after acupuncture. However, rest assured that this condition will resolve within 24 hours after symptoms appear.
