Part 1: The Cat's Labor Indicators

During the birthing process, cats may exhibit a decrease in appetite, sometimes leading to an aversion to food. They may frequently cry out, appear disoriented, and have a tendency to grab at objects around them. The mother cat's milk can be expressed a few days before the actual delivery. The vulva will swell, and the mucous membranes will turn red, with discharge occurring within a few hours after the kittens are born. The cat's abdomen will be distended, and a rectal temperature check will reveal a drop of about one degree compared to the normal body temperature.

How Long Do Cat Contractions Last?

Cat contractions typically normalize within 1 to 3 hours. If the contractions persist for over 4 hours without any signs of progress, it may indicate infertility or dystocia. In such cases, the mother cat should be taken to a professional veterinary hospital for a cesarean section as soon as possible. Prolonged infertility can be dangerous for both the mother and the kittens.

Part 3: Postpartum Care for Cats

Approximately one month after giving birth, the mother cat will generally regain her health. After nursing, she will be quite weak and will require an immediate boost of nutrients such as chicken breast, beef, and eggs to stimulate milk production. The new cat nest should be equipped with fresh, clean pads, and the food, water, and litter boxes should be placed close to the nest for the mother's convenience. The nipples should be cleaned regularly to remove any dried milk residue, preventing bacterial growth, and the vulva should be wiped clean with medical gauze.
