Symptoms & Treatment for Cat Concussion: Quick Guide

21. December 2024
Concussion is a condition caused by a blunt force trauma to the skull, leading to widespread damage

Concussion is a condition caused by a blunt force trauma to the skull, leading to widespread damage to the brain's nerves. It manifests as brain function disturbances, such as loss of consciousness, diminished or absent reflexes, and other neurological impairments. Importantly, a concussion involves excessive vibration of the brain tissue without any visible damage upon examination.

This injury is commonly triggered by external forces such as blows, collisions, falls, drops, or traffic accidents.

Symptoms typically emerge suddenly after the injury, presenting with general neurological signs or focal inflammatory symptoms. A concussion may present with an immediate collapse into unconsciousness, followed by a decrease or loss of consciousness and reflexes, dilated pupils, slower breathing, and sometimes a wheezing sound. The pulse may quicken and become irregular, and vomiting may occur along with incontinence. After a few minutes to several hours, the individual may gradually regain consciousness, with reflexes returning, and the body may experience muscle contractions, spasms, and tremors. The eyes may tremble, and the patient may lift their head to look around. After several struggles, they may be able to stand up.

In Western medicine:

To prevent cerebral hemorrhage, a combination of 6aminocaproic acid, antifibrinolytic acid, and 10% glucose solution is administered intravenously, twice or thrice daily, or alternatives like VK3, thrombocytopenia, and antihemorrhagic drugs can be used.

To reduce intracranial pressure, a 5% glucose solution mixed with 20% mannitol solution is administered intravenously, along with furosemide in 10% glucose solution.

To promote brain cell function recovery, for patients with prolonged unconsciousness, a mixture of cytochrome C and 25% glucose solution can be administered intravenously, along with adenosine triphosphate given by intramuscular injection.

In cases of seizures, spasms, or restlessness, sedatives such as sodium phenobarbital and chlorpromazine can be used. Antibiotics may be administered if the patient has a high fever.

In traditional Chinese medicine:

The formula consists of 15g of polygala tenuifolia, 10g of poria cocos, 15g of amomum xanthioides, 15g of biota orientalis, 20g of Imperata cylindrica, 10g of polygonatum multiflorum, 15g of poria cocos, 10g of euryale ferox, 15g of rehmannia glutinosa, 15g of safflower, 15g of ligusticum chuanxiong, 10g of dried tangerine peel, 15g of uncaria rhynchophylla, 10g of pheretima, and 5g of glycyrrhiza uralensis. This mixture is boiled in water, and the warm decoction is administered twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. The course of treatment is 45 doses.

The formula includes polygala tenuifolia, poria cocos, and amomum xanthioides, which are strong heart and mind tonics; uncaria rhynchophylla and pheretima, which have calming and antispasmodic properties; Imperata cylindrica and biota orientalis, which are hemostatic herbs to prevent cerebral hemorrhage; polygonatum multiflorum, poria cocos, and euryale ferox, which help reduce brain tissue exudate and lower intracranial pressure; rehmannia glutinosa, glycyrrhiza uralensis, and dried tangerine peel, which tonify the body; ligusticum chuanxiong and safflower, which nourish the blood and benefit brain tissue function recovery.

Components such as rehmannia glutinosa, ligusticum chuanxiong, dried tangerine peel, glycyrrhiza uralensis, and pheretima contain polysaccharides, alkaloids, and phenylglycosides with active substances, which can enhance the immune system and improve the body's resistance.

Additionally,黄芪 (astragalus), polygala tenuifolia, biota orientalis, glycyrrhiza uralensis, and pheretima have inhibitory effects on various common pathogens, preventing secondary bacterial infections in the patient.

The formula also includes astragalus, poria cocos, ligusticum chuanxiong, polygonatum multiflorum, poria cocos, glycyrrhiza uralensis, and safflower, which act as interferon inducers, effectively stimulating the production of endogenous interferon to prevent secondary viral diseases.

Thus, this formula addresses both the symptoms and the root cause of the condition, providing comprehensive treatment.
