Choosing the Right Cat Deworming Medication

Cats can be infected by a variety of parasites, which can be categorized into internal and external parasites. Since different parasites require different treatments, the market offers a range of deworming medications. Regular deworming is crucial for cats. But how should you choose the right deworming medication for your feline friend?

1. Internal Deworming Medications

1.1. Panaduo (Albendazole Tablets)

Ingredients: Albendazole

Indications: Loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, constipation, worms in feces, dull coat

Usage and Dosage: Cats 2.5kg: half a tablet, 2.55kg: one tablet, 510kg: two tablets, 1015kg: three tablets. Feed directly or mix with food.

Precautions: Wait about 6 hours before feeding normally and ensure your cat drinks plenty of water. (Always consult the detailed instructions or an online veterinarian before use.)

1.2. Praziquantel Tablets

Ingredients: Praziquantel

Indications: Animal schistosomiasis, tapeworm disease, cysticercosis

Usage and Dosage: Oral: once, 2.55mg per 1kg body weight for dogs and cats, or as prescribed by a veterinarian.

Precautions: Avoid use in puppies under 4 weeks old and kittens under 6 weeks old.

1.3. Levamisole Hydrochloride Tablets

Ingredients: Levamisole Hydrochloride

Indications: Roundworm, lungworm, heartworm, gastrointestinal worms, nematodes

Usage and Dosage: Oral: once, 10mg per 1kg body weight for dogs and cats, or as prescribed by a veterinarian.

Adverse Reactions: Some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal dysfunction, respiratory distress, head shaking, anxiety, agranulocytosis, pulmonary edema, and immunemediated dermatitis. Some cats may exhibit salivation, excitement, dilated pupils, and vomiting.

1.4. Sulfadimethoxine Tablets

Ingredients: Sulfadimethoxine

Indications: Sensitive bacterial infections, coccidiosis, toxoplasmosis

Usage and Dosage: Suitable for dogs and cats over 30 days old. Administer once daily for 35 days, with the first day's dose doubled. Puppies: 30mg/kg, equivalent to 1/16th of a tablet.

Adverse Reactions: Occasional crystalluria, hematuria, renal tubular obstruction.

Precautions: (1) Crystals may form in the urinary tract, so provide plenty of water. For high doses or longterm use, administer an equal amount of sodium bicarbonate. (2) Use with caution in cats with kidney damage. (3) May cause intestinal flora imbalance in cats, so supplement with appropriate vitamins. (4) If the pet shows an allergic reaction, stop the medication immediately and seek appropriate treatment.

2. External Deworming Medications

2.1. Ivermectin Topical Solution

Ingredients: Ivermectin B1

Indications: Mites, roundworms, hookworms, fleas, ticks, and lice

Usage and Dosage: Small dogs and cats under 5kg: 0.5ml; medium dogs and cats 510kg: 0.51ml; large dogs 1020kg: 12ml; giant dogs 2030kg: 23ml. For external deworming, apply 0.1ml per 1kg body weight directly to the back of the neck, avoiding the pet's tongue. Deworming should be done approximately every 30 days.

Application Method:

Ensure the fur is dry and gently pull it apart to expose the skin.

Break the tip of the dropper and squeeze the required amount.

Apply the medication to an area on the pet's back where the tongue cannot reach.

2.2. Nonylphenol Dripping Agent

Indications: Fleas, lice, and small black spots on the skin

Usage and Dosage: Topical. Gently part the fur and expose the skin, then squeeze the medication along a short line on the pet's skin surface and allow it to dry naturally. For areas or cases with flea infestations, apply once a month. After application, put on an Elizabethan collar.

Adverse Reactions: Some dogs and cats may experience shortterm drooling due to the alcohol content in the carrier.

Precautions: Not suitable for puppies and kittens under 8 weeks old.

These are some common internal and external deworming medications for cats. They are generally suitable for both cats and dogs. It's advisable to keep this information handy to avoid confusion when it's time to deworm your cat. Always choose the medication based on your cat's specific needs.
