What is Canine Parvovirus?
Canine Parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and severe disease that commonly affects puppies that have not been vaccinated. It can manifest in two forms: enteritis and myocarditis. The most common form is enteritis.
Symptoms of Canine Parvovirus
In the early stages, affected dogs may exhibit a rise in body temperature, reaching above 40°C, along with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Initially, the feces may be loose and contain a lot of mucus. In later stages, blood in the feces may appear, accompanied by a distinctive foul odor. Once blood is present in the stool, the dog may become dehydrated, potentially leading to shock, coma, and even death. It is advisable for pet owners to seek immediate veterinary treatment for their dogs when symptoms first appear to prevent the disease from worsening.
Treatment for Canine Parvovirus
1. Upon diagnosis, immediately stop feeding and water intake.
2. It's important to address diarrhea before treating vomiting. Antidiarrheal medications are crucial. Begin by protecting the intestinal mucosa to lay the groundwork for medication. In cases where the mucosa is severely damaged, symptoms like vomiting and loss of appetite may occur. If injectable medications are not available, oral treatments can be used, but they must be administered under a veterinarian's guidance. These treatments typically start to take effect within 24 hours.
3. During the recovery period, if your Golden Retriever is not interested in eating, it's because the intestinal mucosa has not yet healed. You can offer rice porridge, and be sure not to add any other ingredients.
