What are anal glands?

Anal glands, also known as anal sacs, are small glands located within the rectum of cats. These glands are naturally expressed during defecation. Typically, there are two anal glands, one located at the 4 o'clock and the other at the 8 o'clock position relative to the cat's anus. They contain a smelly, sticky secretion with a strong, pungent odor.

Functions of Anal Glands:

Anal glands serve the purpose of marking territory through排泄, and they also act as a lubricant during a cat's bowel movements.

It is crucial for cat owners to regularly observe their cat's rear end. If the anal glands appear red and swollen, or if the cat is dragging its bottom on the ground, it's a sign to pay attention to cleaning the anal glands. Neglecting this can lead to anal gland inflammation and even ulceration.

How to Properly Clean Anal Glands:

a. Gently hold your cat and position yourself so you can clearly see the anal glands. Avoid putting your face close to the glands to prevent any unpleasant surprises.

b. Wrap your finger with a tissue and insert your index and thumb into the anal gland area, gently massaging the glands.

c. With your fingers, apply pressure from the inside out. This will cause the anal gland's liquid to be expelled or released.
