Section 1: Causes of Cats Sniffling Due to a Cold

Cats can develop a runny nose for a variety of reasons, with the most common being what we refer to as a common cold. This type of cold is usually triggered by a chill, and can often be managed by ensuring your feline friend stays warm, hydrated, and wellnourished. In cases where the cold is more severe, you may opt to use petspecific cold remedies. Beyond the common cold, other diseases that can lead to a runny nose in cats include bacterial and viral infections, such as herpesvirus, calicivirus, chlamydia, mycoplasma, and Bordetella. When a cat's runny nose is caused by these bacteria and viruses, medical treatment is necessary.

Section 2: Different Situations of Cats' Runny Noses

Cats with a cold typically exhibit two types of runny noses. The first is clear mucus, which indicates that the cat's cold is not severe. In such cases, careful attention from the owner is sufficient, and medication may not be needed. However, if the cat's mucus becomes thicker and changes from clear to yellow or green, it suggests a more serious cold. Determining the cause of the cat's cold, whether due to bacteria or viruses, can often be inferred from other symptoms or a veterinary diagnosis.

Common symptoms of feline herpes include: fever, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and a chance of oral inflammation;

Typical symptoms of feline calicivirus include: fever, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, oral inflammation, and sometimes arthritis;

Common symptoms of chlamydia in cats include: fever, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and swollen lymph nodes;

Typical symptoms of mycoplasma in cats include: fever, watery eyes, swollen lymph nodes, and anemia;

General symptoms of Bordetella include: fever, sneezing, runny nose, cough, watery eyes, and sometimes swollen lymph nodes.

It is recommended that cats with bacterial infections be treated with antibiotics and nasal drops. For viral infections, in addition to pet cold remedies, antiviral medications may be necessary.
