How to Administer Cat Cold Medicine Safely
How to Administer Cold Medicine to a Cat
Part 1: Tablets
1. Place your cat on a stable surface, such as a table or chair. It's ideal to have someone else assist you in holding the cat still. If you're alone, you can wrap the cat in a large towel to prevent it from wriggling. For particularly feisty cats, consider using a cat carrier.
2. With your right hand, gently grasp the tablet. Use your left hand to support the cat's face with your thumb and forefinger, and your palm to cradle its head. Keep the cat's head up and open its mouth with your right hand, carefully depositing the pill into the back of its throat. This is crucial; if the pill lands on the tongue, the cat will likely spit it out immediately.
3. Maintain a firm grip on the cat's head until it has swallowed the pill smoothly.
Should the cat resist or bite during the process, it's highly recommended to use a syringe or pill gun. These devices can easily deliver tablets by simply placing the pill at the top of the syringe or gun.
Part 2: Liquid Medications
When administering liquid, you'll need a syringe or a catspecific medication syringe. In the second step, place the syringe between the cat's upper and lower gums. Gently push the syringe to allow the liquid to enter the cat's mouth. As the cat feels the liquid, it will naturally extend its tongue to drink, swallowing the liquid.
It's not uncommon for cats to develop a fear of medication after experiencing it. When they see their owner with pills or a syringe, they may flee. This is perfectly normal. To help your cat feel more at ease, immediately reward it with a small treat or comfort it in your arms after a successful administration.
Now that you've learned how to give your cat cold medicine, are you feeling more confident? Remember, if a cat's cold is severe, treatment is urgent. If you're unable to administer the medication yourself, and time is of the essence, it's best to seek the help of a veterinarian to avoid any delays in treatment.
