Ultimate Cat Food Selection Guide: Tips for Healthy Cho
If you notice that your cat has become addicted to dry food, avoid the temptation to abruptly switch to wet food or meat, as this sudden change might lead to your cat refusing to eat anything. It's crucial to approach the situation with a scientific method to adjust your cat's condition. Below, we'll introduce a method to help your cat overcome its dry food addiction.
1) Transition from FreeFeeding to Scheduled Meals
Switch to feeding your cat on a schedule rather than leaving dry food out all the time. Serve the original dry food without adding any other food. Offer two meals a day, each for about half an hour, and remove any uneaten food. This approach can significantly improve your cat's mental state, making it more playful and affectionate rather than constantly sleeping.
It's important to note that feeding twice a day is designed to create a sense of hunger in your cat, making it more receptive to new types of food. Once your cat gets used to this routine, you can increase the frequency to three meals a day. The interval between meals should be balanced to avoid significant fluctuations in urine pH levels or overeating that could lead to vomiting. For raw feeding, aim for about 2% to 3% of your cat's body weight in food per day. For a 12pound cat, that would be approximately 120 to 180 grams of raw meat. Assuming a serving of 150 grams spread over two to three meals, each serving would be about 50 to 75 grams.
2) Introduce Wet Food Gradually
Once your cat is accustomed to scheduled meals, start placing a small amount of wet food next to the dry food without mixing them. The goal is to get your cat accustomed to the presence of wet food, even if it doesn't eat it at first. Gradually decrease the amount of dry food and increase the amount of wet food until they are about equal. This subtle change will help your cat improve its diet without realizing it.
3) Add Water to the Food
Maintain a 50/50 ratio of dry and wet food, and start adding water gradually. For instance, mix 40 grams of dry food with 40 grams of wet food and then add 80 grams of water. Combine the wet food and water in the bowl first, then sprinkle the dry food on top. This method can make the food more appealing to your cat. Try different flavors of wet food to see which one your cat prefers.
The addition of water is to help your cat get used to eating wet food more frequently and to increase its water intake.
4) Adjust the Ratio of Dry to Wet Food
Keep the total daily food weight consistent and gradually reduce the proportion of dry food, moving towards a completely wet food diet.
The entire process can take 2 to 3 months. Be patient and avoid rushing the transition. Don't get overly excited when your cat starts to lap at the wet food and immediately switch to a pure wet food diet, as this is often not effective. While dry food offers convenience for many new pet owners, it's not the only option, and it's not necessarily the most nutritionally balanced. Our pets deserve fresh, natural diets, so if your cat shows signs of dry food addiction, be particularly patient and act promptly to help your feline friend adjust.
