Section 1: Symptoms of Heatstroke in Hamsters

When a hamster starts to suffer from heatstroke, it may initially appear overly excited and act erratically, darting around the cage. If not promptly cooled down, the hamster will eventually exhibit signs of exhaustion, a decrease in appetite, reluctance to move, difficulty standing, elevated body temperature, rapid breathing, and red ears.

Should the hamster continue to be inactive and remain in a sleeping posture after suffering from heatstroke for some time without receiving immediate cooling measures, it can become dehydrated and die within 20 to 40 minutes.

Section 2: Solutions for Hamster Heatstroke

First and foremost, the owner should quickly move the hamster to a cool, wellventilated area for rest. If there's an air conditioner at home, placing the hamster in the cooled room can help lower its body temperature physically.

It's advisable to give the hamster a small amount of Huoxiang Zhengqi Liquid (a traditional Chinese medicine) and use a cotton swab to gently apply some physiological saline to the hamster's mouth, allowing the liquid to slowly enter its digestive system. If physiological saline is not available, a mixture of tap water with a pinch of salt can be used as a substitute, though it may be less effective. This can still help replenish some fluids and aid in the hamster's metabolic processes.

In cases where the symptoms are severe, such as openmouth breathing and difficulty breathing, immediate emergency measures like administering a cardiac stimulant and oxygen therapy are necessary. If a veterinary clinic is not nearby, the owner can try giving the hamster a few pieces of a quickacting heartsaving pill, and then gently blowing into the hamster's mouth with a straw.

After taking emergency measures, it typically takes several to ten hours for a hamster to gradually recover. Once the owner notices the hamster regaining consciousness, it's recommended to continue supplementing with physiological saline for about three hours and then place the hamster in a wellventilated area for rest. If the hamster's body temperature begins to drop, it's important to ensure proper warmth.

The ideal temperature for a hamster is around 2028 degrees Celsius. During the summer months, when temperatures rise, it's crucial to take timely precautions to keep your hamster cool. For more information on hamster heatstroke, check out "Why Do Hamsters Get Heatstroke?"
