What External Features to Look for When Buying a Golden Retriever Puppy

1. Eyes

When selecting a Golden Retriever puppy, it's important to note that purebred adults should not have any white showing in their eyes when looking straight ahead. However, when purchasing a young puppy, this is not a feature to seek. All mammals have a characteristic: the size of their eyes remains relatively unchanged from birth to adulthood. Many people have large eyes as children, only to see them shrink as they grow older, simply because the eyes themselves do not change. Therefore, when buying a Golden Retriever puppy, some eye exposure is appropriate.

2. Mouth

Gently grasp the puppy's mouth with your hands. A thicker, furry mouth in a puppy often indicates a wider mouth as an adult. A narrow mouth can lead to a pointed snout. In general, a wider mouth suggests stronger grip, which is a desirable trait.

3. Ears

Golden Retriever ears should not be too large or too long. This is not a positive trait but rather a negative one. When the ear tips are pulled up, they should just cover the front of the dog's eyes. If they extend beyond this, it is considered a flaw.

4. Nose

A Golden Retriever's nose should be black. A red nose disqualifies the dog from participating in official dog shows.

5. Head

The Golden Retriever head has two distinct features: first, there is a very prominent bone bump at the back of the head, and a head without this bump is considered to be of mixed breed. Second, the nose should be centered and form a vertical line with a slight indentation in the middle, with a deeper indentation at the lower part.

6. Coat Color

It's interesting that everyone has their own preferences for the color of a Golden Retriever. Some prefer a rich golden hue, while others favor a lighter shade, almost white. Beyond these two color ranges, there are also black and white variations. As the name suggests, the best choice for a Golden Retriever is naturally the golden color.

7. Coat Volume

A Golden Retriever with a thicker coat is generally preferred.

8. Tail

When a Golden Retriever is standing, its tail should be slightly downward倾斜. When choosing a Golden Retriever puppy, the tail should be tucked behind the hindquarters or hang moderately when the dog is standing still. When running, the tail should not curl completely backward or upwards like that of a Chinese rural dog.
