Top 4 Common Goldfish Diseases: Quick Guide
Common ailments such as ich, white spot disease, and vertical scale disease are quite prevalent in goldfish. It's advisable for beginners to familiarize themselves with the typical diseases affecting goldfish, so they can promptly recognize any bodily abnormalities in their pets and treat them accordingly. Below, we delve into a detailed overview of some of the most common diseases that affect goldfish.
Common Diseases in Goldfish
1. White Spot Disease. This is a common fish disease that goldfish are particularly susceptible to. White spot disease is caused by a tiny parasite called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, and it tends to occur more frequently during spring and late autumn.
Preventive Measures: White spot disease requires a comprehensive treatment approach, including regular water changes and slightly raising the water temperature. For the first 23 days, use a heater to bring the water temperature up to around 30°C, as the parasite cannot tolerate high temperatures. This will cause the parasites to die off and detach from the fish. Afterward, use a syringe to remove the waste and pathogens from the tank, and then add a small amount of salt. Alternatively, you can dip the infected fish in a solution of a small amount of mercuric nitrate mixed with water. However, be cautious with the dosage, as it should be only 0.001 mg per pot of water. If there are plants or other decorations in the tank, medication may not be suitable. To prevent secondary infections, you can also add a small amount of salt to the tank, around 0.3%, and ensure it is iodinefree. To reduce the incidence of white spot disease, it's recommended to let tap water sit for a longer period to 'age' before use.
2. Vertical Scale Disease. Also known as scale rot, this is another common fish disease. It is caused by the bacterium Piscirickettsia salmonis and is often triggered by significant temperature changes during water changes, particularly in winter.
Preventive Measures: Mix potassium permanganate in a bucket of water to create a dark solution, and dip the goldfish in it for a duration that suits the fish's tolerance. After dipping, rinse the fish in clean water and apply a thin layer of furazolidone powder to the affected areas. With several treatments, the affected scales should gradually reduce in size and the fish should heal over time.
3. Print Disease. Characterized by inflamed skin, red spots, partial鳞片脱落, muscle congestion, and a dull response, goldfish suffering from print disease may die if left untreated. The disease is caused by Gramnegative bacteria and can be exacerbated by physical injuries to the fish.
Preventive Measures: Increase oxygenation in the tank, use an ultraviolet sterilization lamp to kill bacteria, and feed the fish with bait containing furazolidone. Apply a highconcentration solution of potassium permanganate to the affected areas. To reduce the incidence of this disease, prevent the fish from sustaining injuries.
4. Hemorrhagic Disease. This disease is marked by localized or widespread bleeding in the fish's body, particularly in the fins, with the tail fin being most affected. It is primarily caused by poor water quality or infection with the bacterium Flavobacterium columnare.
Preventive Measures: Soak the affected fish in saltwater with a concentration of 2%3% for 1015 minutes each day. Alternatively, you can bathe the fish in furazolidone at a concentration of 0.01%0.02% for the same duration. If environmental changes lead to stress in the fish, this can also trigger hemorrhagic disease, so it's important to provide stress relief for the fish.
Today, we've highlighted four common diseases in goldfish. We hope that new goldfish owners take these examples seriously and take the necessary precautions to maintain a healthy tank, reducing the likelihood of their fish falling ill.
