How to Distinguish Between False Pregnancy in Dogs

It can be quite challenging to differentiate between a dog's false pregnancy and a real one, as their outward appearances are often quite similar. To quickly determine if a dog is truly pregnant, various methods can be employed, such as abdominal palpation, auscultation, ultrasound, and Xray imaging. To assess whether a dog is experiencing false pregnancy, you can use the actual signs of pregnancy as a guide for both positive and negative indicators.

1. Visual Examination of the Bitch. Generally, a bitch's pregnancy symptoms become noticeable around 15 to 20 days after conception. At this stage, the bitch may exhibit a decreased appetite, restlessness, and vomiting. Her mammary glands will begin to swell, feeling somewhat firm to the touch, and her chest will start to expand. By around 30 days, you can clearly see the bitch's abdomen gradually swelling, her appetite increasing, and her weight gradually rising, although she may show a preference for certain foods. The bitch's temperament will become gentler and she will be more willing to spend time with her owner. After 40 days of pregnancy, the bitch's abdomen will be significantly enlarged, some of her fur may start to fall out, becoming sparse, and her breasts will swell, sometimes even leaking milk. An Xray examination at this point can reveal the number and size of the puppies.

2. Palpation. Palpation involves using your hands to feel the bitch's abdomen for the presence of puppies. This method is typically started around 30 days after conception. If the bitch is pregnant, the owner or veterinarian can feel the presence of eggssized embryos in her abdomen. However, before palpation, it is essential to ensure that the bitch has eliminated waste and is fasting to avoid mistaking feces in her rectum for a fetus.

3. Auscultation. After one month of pregnancy, you can use a stethoscope to listen to the fetal heartbeat and activity. Placing the stethoscope on the bitch's abdomen will allow you to clearly hear the fetal heartbeat.

When determining if a dog is experiencing false pregnancy, you can use the absence of the above symptoms as evidence. Additionally, consider the following indicators:

False pregnancy bitches may show an earlier and more pronounced abdominal enlargement compared to those who are truly pregnant. Even in the later stages of pregnancy, false pregnancy bitches may maintain a plump figure. However, true pregnancy bitches may appear slightly thinner or have shedding on their backs due to malnutrition as they need to provide more nutrition for the puppies.
