As a new pet parent, the first time you hear about the need for continuous treatment might raise a few eyebrows! Why such a prolonged process? Could it be manufacturers colluding to make a quick buck? The answer is a resounding no!

Let's dive into the lifecycle of fleas. These pesky parasites go through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Adult fleas have the uncanny ability to lay up to 50 eggs a day. If you spot a flea on your furry friend, it's a sign that there's a hidden flea population lurking in your home, including eggs, larvae, and pupae. This is what's famously known as the "flea pyramid," or the "flea iceberg."

What we see on our pets is just the tip of the iceberg. Only about 5% of the flea population is visible as adults. The other 95% consists of unseen pupae, larvae, and eggs!

Typically, adult fleas start laying eggs within 24 to 48 hours of being on your pet. These eggs will hatch into larvae in about a week. These larvae feast on the dander and feces of the adult fleas, and after about 7 to 14 days, they will form pupae. The pupae can remain dormant for a significant amount of time, up to 6 months or more, depending on the conditions. If the environment is favorable, they will emerge as adults; if not, they can wait it out until conditions are right.

Most flea treatments available to us can only kill adult fleas and larvae. Some also contain environmental inhibitors that prevent eggs from hatching. However, no treatment can destroy pupae, and they can survive in extreme conditions for a considerable period.

Research shows that pupae can survive in the environment for over six months. That's why, when you spot a flea, the key is to maintain a consistent treatment regimen, ensuring that you continue the process for over six months to completely eradicate the infestation.

Beyond fleas, there are other parasitic issues that can even lead to infectious diseases. If your little furballs have been infected with parasites, it's crucial to follow the recommended intervals for prevention to achieve the best control and prevention outcomes.
