Primary Symptoms:

The cat's ear pinna exhibits an elastic swelling on its concave side, which can be felt to have a fluctuating sensation. In cats with light or white fur, the swelling may appear deep red or purplishbrown. Initially, there is warmth, pain, and tenderness. After a few days, the swelling becomes firm and produces a crackling sound upon palpation. Puncture may release blood, and infection can lead to the formation of an abscess.

Prevention and Treatment:

For small hematomas, after local disinfection, the blood can be aspirated using a needle. Subsequently, apply a pressure ear wrap for 7 to 10 days to prevent further bleeding.

Large hematomas should be surgically incised after the hematoma has solidified, to remove the clot and the hematoma contents. The area is then sutured, and the stitches are typically removed after 2 weeks. Alternatively, blood can be aspirated first, followed by the application of a traditional Chinese medicine called "Ruyi Golden Powder" externally.

In cases where there is an underlying condition such as otitis externa or ear mites, treatment of the primary disease should be concurrent to prevent secondary abscesses. If the affected cat exhibits symptoms like head shaking, ear flicking, or restlessness, an Elizabethan collar should be worn, or appropriate sedatives should be administered to prevent recurrence of the hematoma.
