Section 1: Clinical Symptoms of Canine Ear Mites

1. Ear mites primarily inhabit a dog's external ear canal, leading to an excessive amount of earwax secretion and often resulting in secondary otitis externa. The constant itching causes the dog to shake its head, scratch at its ears, howl, and even rub its ears against objects, which can lead to bleeding in the external ear canal. In severe cases, the infection can spread from the ears to the forehead and behind the earlobes.

2. The ear canal may exhibit dark brown wax and exudates, and sometimes crusts that appear scaly.

3. If the infection spreads to the meninges, the dog may exhibit symptoms of epilepsy.

4. During an ear examination with an otoscope, white or pinkcolored ear mites can be observed moving on top of the dark exudates.

5. In cases where the symptoms are not very pronounced, examining the ear canal for crusts on the skin can help determine if ear mites are present.

Section 2: Prevention and Treatment Measures for Canine Ear Mites

1. Gently clean the ear by injecting a nonirritating oil into the ear canal, then massaging the ear to help eliminate many mites.

2. Use a metal loop to clean the ear, carefully removing a large amount of exudates that are close to the eardrum.

3. After cleaning, apply an ear mite treatment, such as dimeticone, Conex, or a protective oil, to the ear canal.

4. For dogs with severe canine distemper, it is recommended to use insecticides or medicated baths daily to treat the distemper, as this will kill mites that are not in the external ear canal.

5. If there is inflammatory damage, apply hydrocortisoneneomycin ointment to the affected area until the inflammation subsides.
