Differences Between West German Shepherds and East German Shepherds:
What sets West German Shepherds apart from East German Shepherds? While West German Shepherds are bred for their physical appearance, East German Shepherds are bred for enhanced working abilities. East German Shepherds lack the elegant lines of the West German Shepherds, which are characterized by a distinct back curve. Typically, when we refer to West German Shepherds, we are talking about showline German Shepherds, whereas East German Shepherds are often associated with workingline German Shepherds. Despite both originating from the same country, their body structures and roles in everyday life differ significantly.
Both the East German Shepherd and the West German Shepherd trace their lineage back to the same ancestors. However, their divergence can be attributed to the postwar division of Germany into two politically distinct nations. Following the Second World War, Germany was split into East Germany and West Germany by the opposing capitalist West and the Soviet Union.
Under different political parties, the breeding of East German Shepherds focused more on improving working abilities, while West German Shepherds were bred with a greater emphasis on physical appearance.
The East German Shepherd, primarily a workingline breed, often features a deep pigmentation in their coat, a shorter and sturdier head structure, and welldeveloped skeletal structure. Unlike the showline dogs, they do not have a pronounced back curve, as a flat back is more conducive to athletic movement and provides greater energy for motion.
Later on, the East German Shepherd was bred to highlight the hereditary aspects of working ability, ensuring a high level of mental alertness to handle daily tasks.
The most significant difference between the two lies in the West German Shepherd's focus on the dog's appearance and competition participation, often overlooking traits such as courage, work ethic, and athletic instincts. To many, the mention of West German Shepherd evokes images of the showline breed, while East German Shepherd is synonymous with the workingline breed!
