Guide to Entering Your Dog in Competitive Shows

Section 1: Training Puppies at 67 Weeks Old

When puppies reach the age of 67 weeks, it's an ideal time to begin training them to stand on a table. Start by using treats to guide them to stand up straight and focus on you. Initially, keep the training sessions brief, no longer than 58 minutes, to avoid overwhelming the puppy. Place a treat in front of its mouth to encourage it to lean forward. Next, position the puppy's limbs properly and use commands. Reward with a treat after holding the position for about 35 seconds. Gradually increase the duration of the session, and if the puppy keeps moving forward, gently place its front paws on the edge of the table to signal that it's unsafe to proceed.

Section 2: Training Puppies at 8 Weeks Old

By the time puppies are 8 weeks old, they should be able to follow commands and remain still on a table, which can be photographed to help assess their potential as show dogs. It's also essential to feel the puppy's skeletal structure by hand and measure it with tools, as well as observe its gait and temperament. This highlights the importance of both natural physical abilities and the training provided by humans.

Section 3: Training Puppies at 34 Months Old

When puppies are around 34 months, you can introduce them to drag training, where they learn to walk with a leash. Use treats or toys to give commands and encourage them to follow. If they resist, first help them get accustomed to wearing a leash, then teach them to follow commands with treats and instructions. Dogs that are shy around strangers may struggle in competitions. If possible, expose them to new people and situations, and praise them softly while strangers pet them. Don't forget to reward them with treats after the interaction to boost their confidence.

Section 4: Training Puppies at 6 Months Old

By the time puppies are 6 months old, they are ready to participate in their first competition and attend dog shows. If you and your puppy are prepared, you can enter competitions, where you can showcase your dog's strengths while minimizing any weaknesses. When judges inspect your dog, greet them politely, thank them after the examination, and show respect. Whether your dog wins or loses, always thank the judges. Remember, the competition field is about winning and losing, but the focus should be on the experience and the bond you share with your dog.
