Diagnosing a Dog's Runny Nose: Key Observations

When initially assessing a dog with a runny nose, a simple yet effective method is to place a white tissue over the dog's nostrils. By observing the amount of nasal discharge, its consistency, and color, you can gain initial insights into the potential illness.

Here are the key points to consider:

1. If the discharge is serous, appearing clear, thin, and watery, it may indicate a cold or rhinitis.

2. Mucous discharge, which is thicker and resembles egg white in consistency and a grayishwhite color, suggests an acute upper respiratory infection or bronchitis.

3. Mucopurulent discharge, containing both mucus and pus, is yellowishwhite and sticky, pointing to canine sinusitis.

4. Purulent discharge, which is even more thick and may resemble paste, ointment, or clumps, is indicative of canine distemper, pneumonia, bronchitis, and other conditions.

5. Serous discharge mixed with bubbles may signal pulmonary hemorrhage, edema, or congestion. If the nasal discharge contains blood, blood clots, or streaks, it could be due to pulmonary congestion, foreign body pneumonia, or emphysema.

In cases where the runny nose is merely due to a cold, enhanced care and hydration can be effective. Offering your dog plenty of water and possibly administering herbal remedies like Banlangen (Isatis root) and antiviral oral liquids can help. Typically, a course of three days should resolve the mild cold. Remember to follow dosage guidelines similar to those for children.
